The Hidden Costs of Traditional Agency Engagements

An agency quotes you 15k per month. Sounds reasonable. But that 15k hides a lot.
First: the ramp. You pay for 4 weeks of planning before anyone writes a line of code. That's another €15,000 in hidden costs. Nobody calls it that, but you're paying it.
Second: the waiting tax. Change requests take 2 weeks. Why? Because your account manager is overloaded with 12 other clients. Every small change is a meeting, a ticket, a sprint cycle. That's 100 hours a year of your internal time waiting for approvals. At your hourly rate, that's 10-50k in lost productivity.
Third: the knowledge tax. The agency owns your site. You don't. Want to make a small change yourself? Can't. You're locked in. Need a new feature? That's another 25k contract. You're trapped.
Fourth: the rework tax. By month 4, you realise the strategy was wrong. The agency says fixing it will cost another €30,000 and take 6 weeks. You're now €150,000 deep with nothing shipping.
The real cost of a €15,000/month retainer isn't €15,000. It's €15,000 + €15,000 (ramp) + €20,000 (waiting) + €30,000 (rework) + €20,000 (locked-in features). You're at €100,000 a year before you even have something that works.
